Centerville Barbers...A Little Off The Top

Hey guys.....this post is for you.  If you are anything like me, then you know that there is nothing better than a great haircut.  However, that seemed to be a fools errand trying to find a place where I was happy.  For years, I have bounced around from salon to salon, looking for a good cut.  There are a plethora of shops around town that are geared for men that offer sports on television, a neck/shoulder massage and mediocre haircut.  You know the kind:  a cut you wanted something a little different and new.  Then after a week or maybe two, you are stuck with an uneven cut that looks like all the others you have gotten in the past.  I was in that position for many years.  I would find a place that I liked and for a while I would be contented.  Then the shop would raise the price and I would be right back where I started.

One day, one a whim, I asked my buddy Adam where he got his hair cut.  He told me about a place called Centerville Barbers.  I asked if he liked them and he enthusiastically was telling me how awesome they are.  Adam always sports a cool cut, so if he liked them, than they must be terrific.  I just showed up one day (a Tuesday) and after waiting for a few minutes, owner and operator Tim Minton got me right into the chair.  They do take walk-ins, but it's always better to call and make an appointment.

Immediately, Tim had my at ease with his dry sense of humor, smile and his taking time to ask me what kind of cut I was wanting.  After a couple of minutes, he started to do his thing.  Tim has asked me where I got my hair cut before.  It was Tim's opinion that most guys wanted a salon where a woman cut their hair.  Why?  Because most guys like "boobs in their back."  Some guys would rather have a mediocre cut by a woman than have a fantastic cut by a trained barber who know exactly how to cut a man's hair.

Centerville Barber's charges $13 dollars for a haircut.  What do you get for that $13 dollars?  A precision cut, a neck shave with warm shave cream, and your eyebrows trimmed.  Okay, time to get real here fellas.  Let's face it:  women's lot in life is to bear the pain of childbirth.  A man's lots in life?  Our eyebrows grow together.  Seems like a fair trade-off, huh??  At the end of the haircut, you usually have your choice of styling product that Tim will apply to your hair.  A couple of flicks with a comb and you are finished!

In addition to haircuts, Centerville Barbers also offer a variety of services.  I have taken advantage of the shave back in November of 2014.  My buddies Joshua, Adam, my Dad and I had a guy's night out that included a wet shave and a game of Euchre.  Tim was the lucky one to shave all four of us guys and I can honestly say you haven't lived until you had a trained, professional barber give you a shave.  Warm shaving cream, numerous hot towels. and the pre-shave oil to help soften the stubble are all weaved together for an unforgettable experience.  Not only to you smell like a dude, you leave with possibly one of the best shaves of your life.  Truly!  A word to the wise about a shave.  Be sure to schedule an appointment for the end of the day for the shave.  That way either Tim and Luke (Tim's business partner) can concentrate on your shave without having to watch and worry that there are young ones running around.  Nobody wants to think about the horrors of children bumping into the barber with a blade in his hand, right?

One of the perks of Centerville Barbers is that Tim and Luke offer beer.  Yes, you read that right.  Beer.  Tim has a kitchen area where there is a refrigerator stocked with beer, so that way if there is a bit of a wait, you can grab a beer and relax as you wait for your turn.  Another perk is all kinds of hair products are on display and available to purchase,  In fact, Tim uses a lot of the products that he sells.  So if you happen to like the smell or the hold that particular gel or wax gives you, chances are you can buy some of it right there in the shop!

Bottom line...what I like most about Centerville Barbers is that Tim takes care of details, no matter how minuscule.  I recently have been having a part cut into my hair.  Tim helps to take care of maintaining it when I return to have my hair cut.  In addition, he also clips the little wispies I have on my hairline around my forehead.  The devil is in the details and it's things like that keep me coming back to them.

The one thing that you will notice when you walk into Centerville Barbers is the level of cleanliness of the shop.  There is never clutter, and the smell of clean permeates the air.  I have been in other shops and usually follow after someone who has had their hair cut.  Typically, there was hair laying all over the floor.  Not here.  Again, the tiniest of details are handled.

Expose'-Exposure

Sometimes, people play with love, falling in love is just a game..... Picture this:  1984.  Girl bands and groups on the radio were nothing new.  Madonna, The Pointer Sisters, the Bangles, and Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam were just a smattering of female artists that ruled the airwaves with their unique hits.  However, 1984 was the year that introduced a new style of music called Freestyle (a singable chorus, drum machines, and keyboard solos),  and it was performed by a group of three ladies calling themselves Expose'.  This hot new female band consisted of an eclectic mix of women:  Ann Curless, Gioia Bruno (pronounced Joy-a) and Jeanette Jurado.  These women went on to define an era of dance music and set records in the music industry that are tough to beat even today.  This blog will focus on the singles released from their smash, Lat...

Pointer Sisters-Break Out

If you were growing up in the 70's and 80's, and listening to the radio, the Pointer Sisters were ubiquitous; their songs saturated the airwaves.  There was not a time that I didn't enjoy one of their many hits, and this blog will focus on the singles of  their Triple Platinum album Break out . When the Pointers were recording songs for what would become Break Out , they were already stars in their own right.  They had a Grammy to their name for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for a song that they wrote called Fairytale .  They had amassed several gold singles and gold albums, and they had a massive hits in the early 80's with songs like He's So Shy and Slow Hand . The album, prior to Break Out,  was entitled So Excited.   The first single off the album was the snoozer American Music , which charted in the Pop Top Twenty.  The song's sluggish performance  affected the second single that was released enti...

Pointer Sisters-Contact

Thanks to the stratospheric success of the album Break Out , The Pointer Sisters were the hottest female R&B band in the US, and were on an undeniable roll.  It goes without saying that when a group had a mega hit with an album, the public and record label executives expect a major followup.  The Pointers were more then capable and ready to deliver just that. Even as Ruth Pointer's lead vocals saturated the radio airwaves with Neutron Dance , she joined her sisters Anita and June to start recording songs for the next album.  The Pointers had an ace in the hole with their record producer Richard Perry.  Perry, in his infinite wisdom, wanted to replicate the success of Break Out .  The best way to do it was to invite back the writers that turned out such hits as Automatic , Jump (For My Love) , and Neutron Dance .  In addition, Richard had heard that a new group of guys that had recently formed Mr. Mister and liked some of their demos that the...
