Happy Thanksgiving!

I have to apologize for not posting in the past couple of weeks.  I had a computer issue where my power pack went out.  After getting some help from a few friends, a got the power pack replaced (which I did myself with a bro's help) and I'm back in business!

Thanksgiving has always been my personal favorite holiday.  Many centuries ago when I was a kid, the family always gathered at my house for food and fun.  My Mom delighted in the holiday as well.  I remember she got a turkey in the oven at the butt crack of dawn and the smell of that bird cooking would make us all crazy until it was done.  In addition to the turkey, Mom would make Chex Mix.  Man, I can still smell that now.  She would get the indigents and throw it together and after one hour in the oven, we all chowed down!  Now you can buy Chex Mix in bags at the grocery store.  No thanks!  The homemade version is always the best!  This weekend I am having some guys over for Euchre and I plan to make some of that beloved Chex Mix.  My favorite way to eat it is straight out of the oven while its still hot.

When I think of Thanksgivings in the years past, I can still picture the table full of plates and dishes.  Turkey, Green Bean Casserole, Mashed Potatoes, Dressing (or is it stuffing?), Cranberry Sauce, rolls and Candied Yams or Sweet Potatoes.  Let's not forget the Pumpkin Pie.  Mom had a dessert called Jamboree Cake.  The one ingredient that sticks out in my mind is brown sugar......and the recipe calls for one pound!  I'm surprised that none of us have diabetes!!  That and we still have our own teeth!  After Mom died, the Jamboree Cake went to the wayside.  I missed that dessert because it reminded me of good times with my Mom.  Recently, I was lamenting to Dad that we couldn't find the recipe and how I missed Jamboree Cake.  Dad pulled out an old church cookbook and showed us that Mom had submitted the recipe.  I am thrilled and this Thanksgiving Paula is making the dessert.  Of course, Jamboree Cake is not complete without a heaping helping of Whipped Cream.  Or Cool Whip.  Mom's Jamboree Cake reminds me of that Golden Girls' episode where it is Sophia's birthday and Rose made her "Looks Like Chocolate, Tastes Like Spice, You'll Wish You Had a Bigger Slice Marble Cake."  Ahh, good memories!!

Over the years, there have been other dishes that have crept onto the Thanksgiving menus.  One of them being Brussel Sprouts.  Excuse me while I wretch.  I hated those things from when I was a kid.  Food Network has tirelessly pushed that dish on every Thanksgiving show that airs on their channel.  It must be the in thing right now.  I have never been a fan and right not, I can't see loading my plate with that....ever!

I wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.  I hope you see friends and loved ones over the next few days.  I have a lot to be thankful for this year and I will be saying a prayer of thanks to God for His many blessings.  Much love and good eating from my family to yours!

Pointer Sisters-Break Out

If you were growing up in the 70's and 80's, and listening to the radio, the Pointer Sisters were ubiquitous; their songs saturated the airwaves.  There was not a time that I didn't enjoy one of their many hits, and this blog will focus on the singles of  their Triple Platinum album Break out . When the Pointers were recording songs for what would become Break Out , they were already stars in their own right.  They had a Grammy to their name for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for a song that they wrote called Fairytale .  They had amassed several gold singles and gold albums, and they had a massive hits in the early 80's with songs like He's So Shy and Slow Hand . The album, prior to Break Out,  was entitled So Excited.   The first single off the album was the snoozer American Music , which charted in the Pop Top Twenty.  The song's sluggish performance  affected the second single that was released enti...

Expose'-Exposure

Sometimes, people play with love, falling in love is just a game..... Picture this:  1984.  Girl bands and groups on the radio were nothing new.  Madonna, The Pointer Sisters, the Bangles, and Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam were just a smattering of female artists that ruled the airwaves with their unique hits.  However, 1984 was the year that introduced a new style of music called Freestyle (a singable chorus, drum machines, and keyboard solos),  and it was performed by a group of three ladies calling themselves Expose'.  This hot new female band consisted of an eclectic mix of women:  Ann Curless, Gioia Bruno (pronounced Joy-a) and Jeanette Jurado.  These women went on to define an era of dance music and set records in the music industry that are tough to beat even today.  This blog will focus on the singles released from their smash, Lat...

Expose'-What You Don't Know

They say I should be acting cool, they tell me I'm a fool, they don't see the things I see in you... By the summer of 1988, Expose' was one of the hottest female bands of the late 1980's.  In fact, they were in the catbird seat:  their debut album, Exposure , was a double-platinum success yielding a record-setting four top ten hits singles.  Their last single, Season's Change , had peaked at Number One on the Hot 100.  That being said, there was a new challenge on the horizon in the form of their follow-up second album.  It seemed like a lot of dance acts could not maintain their chart success with a second album.  However, Expose' had three things going for them:  One, Ann, Jeanette, and Gioia had grown close touring to support the Exposure album and had become like sisters.  Second, they had their boss, Arista President, Clive Davis, behind them.  Lastly, their producer, Lewis Martinee, had some killer new songs up his sleev...
